چکیده

Dr. W. O. Spence: This was a man aged 62 years whose past medical history, al' though not particularly relevant, was rather unusual. For many years he had cofl\" plained of headaches and of attacks of pain and exquisite tenderness along the le* costal margin which were only relieved by lying on the floor. He had been seen by many doctors and was regarded either as a neurasthenic or possibly as suffering frolT1 after-effects of cerebral malaria contracted during the 1914-18 war. On October 21st, 1957 he was well although not at work?he had not, in fact> worked for ten years. The following day I was sent for and when I saw him at abou 11.0 a.m., he was complaining of tremendous nausea. There was no actual vomitin? but he obviously felt very much under the weather. It appeared that earlier in the day he had passed a very large motion; I did not actually see it, but he said it was a norma coloured stool. The nausea was not relieved by passing this motion; it persisted all tn time. He could hardly stand any light; this was not a true photophobia but rather th light gave him more nausea. Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome as a result of non-meningococcal infection.

Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome--massive adrenal haemorrhage in the setting of overwhelming clinical sepsis--is usually taken at necropsy to indicate meningococcal infection, and may be the only evidence of this pathogen. This report describes three fatal cases of the syndrome in which the causative organism proved to be a streptococcus. The organisms were detected during routine coroners' aut...

Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome complicating primary biliary sepsis due to Pasteurella multocida in a patient with cirrhosis.

Pasteurella multocida is an opportunistic pathogen causing bacteraemia in patients with liver dysfunction. A fulminant case of acute cholecystitis and septicaemia caused by P multocida, complicated by Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome without skin haemorrhage, is reported in a previously healthy 64 year old Chinese woman. The patient presented with a six hour history of sudden onset epigastric p...

Chest infection associated with the Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome.

We report on three patients who had had chest infections and collapsed and died unexpectedly. Each fulfilled the diagnostic criteria of the Waterhouse-Fr...

Pneumococcal Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome despite a normal spleen.

A previously fit 56 year old female presented with a rapidly progressive and fatal pneumococcal septicaemia with disseminated intravascular coagulation. Post-mortem studies confirmed a Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome and revealed an anatomically normal spleen; intracellular diplococci were seen within splenic macrophages providing evidence of normal splenic function. This appears to be only th...

Fox, B. (1971). Archives of Disease in Childhood, 46, 680. Disseminated intravascular coagulation and the Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome. In a clinico-pathological study of 13 children who died with Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome, there were deposits of fibrin in many organs, especially the adrenal glands and the kidneys. This finding supports the hypothesis that disseminated intravascular ...
